Atmospheric corrosion and impact toughness of steels: Case study in steels with and without galvanizing, exposed for 3 years in Rapa Nui Island

We studied atmospheric corrosion on Rapa Nui Island, using galvanized and non-galvanized SAE 1020 steel samples exposed racks. also added Charpy of both materials to directly determine the effect rate these materials' impact toughness. The results indicated a correlation between toughness loss in materials. In study, we could demonstrate from increased insular population growth contaminants which aid corrosivity. Results showed that SO2 has tripled compared with similar studies done 20 years ago (Mapa Iberoamericano de Corrosión, MICAT), increasing rates. Our show how human factors can influence changes environmental variables strengthen corrosion.
